Energy and Minerals Regulatory Commission EMRC is the regulatory body responsible for regulating the peaceful uses of nuclear energy. EMRC aims, in coordination and collaboration with relevant entities, to regulate and monitor the uses of nuclear energy and ionizing radiation. It works to protect the environment, human health, and property from the risks of pollution and exposure to ionizing radiation, while ensuring the availability of safety conditions, radiation protection requirements, and nuclear safety and security measures.
To achieve this, the EMRC conducts inspection and monitoring activities, issues the necessary personal and institutional permits and licenses for operating nuclear facilities, and ensures that licensees and permit holders comply with applicable legislation. It also engages with international nuclear regulatory bodies to exchange expertise and scientific research.
EMRC also investigates radiological and nuclear incidents or environmental contamination caused by radioactive leaks, identifying their causes to take the necessary measures in coordination with relevant entities to prevent such incidents or mitigate their impact and address their consequences. Additionally, EMRC works to ensure the Kingdom's compliance with international treaties, charters, and agreements related to nuclear applications, such as the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), the Nuclear Safeguards Agreement, the Convention on Physical Protection, and others
