Electric Vehicle Charging Station Activities

In line with the Authority's vision to keep up with developments in the electricity sector, it seeks to align with global trends in reducing carbon levels and transitioning to clean energy. The Authority works on providing an integrated infrastructure for electric vehicle charging stations, aiming to adopt environmentally friendly electric transportation methods, increase their numbers, and distribute them across various regions of the Kingdom.

The Authority has issued instructions for licensing the activities of electric vehicle charging from public or private charging stations. These stations, in various types and forms, contain subcharging stations used to charge electric vehicle batteries (vehicles that move by one or more electric motors either fully or partially using electric power for complete or partial charging) with electrical energy to store in them, after connecting the charging station to the distribution networks, or through generating electricity from renewable energy systems.

  Licenses

The Energy and Minerals Regulatory Commission, through its role, grants permits or licenses in accordance with the regulations governing the activities of public and private electric vehicle charging stations. According to these regulations, no person may establish, own, manage, or operate an electric vehicle charging station without obtaining a permit or license issued by the Commission.

By the end of May 2024, the Energy and Minerals Regulatory Commission granted 82 licenses, including 60 licenses for public electric vehicle charging stations and 22 licenses for private electric vehicle charging stations.
